Paper-thin wrappings for spring rolls are prepared with incredible dexterity at the rate of 15 pieces per minute by Mr. Lim Kim Hoe who has kept the trade in the family for 3 generations.

2.      ‘Rempah Gilling’

Ground Spices

Chowrasta Market (8am – 11am)

 

Aromatic, hand-ground spices freshly prepared for seafood, meat or vegetable curries. The spices are ground by the women in the home while the men sell the products in the market!

3.      ‘Kuih Tayap’

Local Crepes

Stall in front of No. 3, Jalan Kuala Kangsar (8am – 11am)

 

In the incredibly busy road behind Chowrasta market the 80-year old Mr. Lok is bent double over his little stove and push stall meticulously preparing local Chinese crepes with coconut and sugar filling.

4.      Coconut Tarts

Leong Chee Kee Biscuits, 8C, People’s Court off Lebuh Cintra (10am – 6pm)

 

A special tart recipe created by Mr. Leong Chee Kee who came from Canton, China before World War II. The Traditional Chinese pastry shop is now run by his son Mr. Leong How Keng who apprenticed his father from age 7.

5.      ‘Yu Char Kuih’

Deep-fried Savoury

No. 76, Lebuh Cintra (2pm – 6pm)

2C, People’s Court (10am – 6pm)

 

‘Yu Char Kuih’ is a crispy dough fritter popular among the Chinese as a breakfast food. It’s lovely to watch the men stretch, cut and fry the dough in a giant wok. Located in a little row of shops in the central courtyard.

6.      ‘Ais Tingkap’

Windows Sherbet

Next to No. 2, Lebuh Tamil (12noon – 7pm)


This sherbet recipe originating from Sri Lanka is flavoured with rose essence and fresh coconut has been rated the most thirst-quenching drink ever. It is served from an opening in the wallon the right side of Chowrasta wet market.

7.      ‘Roti Benggali’

Traditional Bread

No. 114, Jalan Transfer (8am – 6pm)

 

Crusty bread loaves fresh from the traditional ovens of ‘Ismalia Bakery’ which is founded by Sheik Mohd Ismail who came from Madras, India in 1932. In local coffee shops ask for a serving of ‘roti benggali’ with egg-jam!
