This ancestral temple was built for ancestral worship by Kapitan Cina Chung Keng Kwee, leader of the Hai San Secret Society. One of the richest and most influential Chinese in the 19th century, he was a signatory of the Pangkor Treaty that ended the Larut Wars in Perak.

This architectural masterpiece is a statement of the eclecticism of the times and of Straits Settlements design and detailing. Carefully restored after a century of neglect, "La Maison Blue" has been the location for several films including "Indochine" with Catherine Deneuve.
