Meandering on Penang Hill

Penang Hill Railway Train

The temperature drops to a comfortable level as a vernacular railway ride up 734 m above sea level takes you to Penang Hill. On the way be sure to look out for giant palm leaves, monkeys, snakes
(yes!) after you pass the Temple of Heaven on your right. Take in the vegetable farms and English styled bungalows left over from colonial retreats for the English from the heat and humidity of Georgetown.

Bungalow sitting on hill

Walk along the one road and find admire the bungalows along the way with their gardens. You can even pay for a jeep ride and back along this road.

At one end of the hill stands the Bellevue Hotel. It has an interesting aviary in its grounds that will amuse both adults and children. There is a pay telescope from which you can pick out the
landmarks in the city. It affords a magnificent view of the city from this vantage point. Catch a cruise ship sailing in, and on a fine day you can see Gunung Jerai on the mainland. As an added value, nothing beats cooking seafood, meat and vegetables over a warm steamboat dinner in the cool evening out in its garden.

Wine with a view

water lily pond

David Brown’s Restaurant is a bungalow restaurant that offers the other fantastic view of the island. Sit out in the garden with a glass of wine and a good book as you enjoy the sun, or the shade, looking out at the island spread out at your feet. The garden dining is spread out over a well-kept garden with beautiful flowers and pathways with a lily pond running down the middle.  Dragonflies and birds flit around. As the sun goes down, the frogs croak among the water lilies, and the most amazing sight unfolds. The city lights comes one by one and it seems like a master jeweler begins to set diamonds on a necklace.  As the sky darkens in the night, a magnificent
sparkling jeweled necklace is laid out over Georgetown. Order your Bombe Alaska. As the waiter walks out with a flaming frosted souffle, the stage is set for an unforgettable romantic evening. Enjoy!
