One of Charles's paintings inspired by the Chinese cultural heritage
Charles has been fascinated by Chinese culture for as long as he can remember and he found out only recently that he has some blood tie with the Chinese several generations ago. He told me that when he was a little boy, he looked so Oriental that he was nicknamed ' The Little Chinese Boy'. Perhaps it explained why he has a deep seated fascination for Chinese culture. Charles resided in Beijing for 14 years and seamlessly blended both Eastern and Western techniques by applying Chinese brush strokes to his paintings.
Charles's paintings of the Chinese villages in China
Meeting Charles in person was an extraordinary experience as he spoke of his art and the cities he resided with passion . His philosophy in life is well reflected in his artistry which elevates the mundane to an art form that he wishes to share with the world. It is this spirit of living a beautiful life that gives him the unique expression of capturing objects of desire in a media that he can effortlessly express through his paintings.
So what brought an artist of his stature to Penang?
He is charmed by the cultural heritage, especially that of Chinese heritage of Penang ....its buildings, people , colours and flavours all provided Charles with immense inspirations for his next art exhibition which will be staged at J
in Xiew Art Gallery on 26th November to 11 December. He was fascinated by The Khoo Kongsi , The Blue Mansion, the colourful and vibrant Georgetown with the trishaws and artisans . These scenes have provided much food for thought for Charles and we eagerly await what the master painter will capture on his canvas in his upcoming exhibition .
